What is a Slot?
A slot is a specific position or time in which something can take place. For example, a television program’s “time slot” is the time when it is broadcast. A slot can also refer to a specific opening in an airplane’s wings that allows for the flow of air over the wing during flight. The word can also be used as a verb, meaning to bolt or lock a door or window: The shackle was slotted into the hole in the door.
In casinos, a slot machine is a type of video game that accepts cash or, in the case of ticket-in, ticket-out machines, paper tickets with barcodes, which are then inserted into the machine’s slot. The reels then spin and stop to rearrange the symbols. When a winning combination is made, the player receives a payout.
